More Tenants In Rent Arrears This Year

November 26, 2010 By admin

There has been a significant increase in the number of tenants in rent arrears this year. This has led to a 66 per cent rise in dispute cases taken by landlords to the Private Residential Tenancies Board (PRTB) on the issue.

The PRTB, which provides a dispute resolution where a tenant, landlord or third party is unable to resolve the matter themselves, said on 21st November 2010 that it had received 660 applications for dispute resolution from landlords due to rent arrears so far this year, compared with 400 applications during 2009.

A spokeswoman for the board said the upsurge in rent arrears was probably due to the recession, which is obviously making it more difficult for some tenants to keep up with their rent payments.

1,842 applications for dispute resolution have been made to the board so far this year. The spokeswoman said this represented a 19 per cent increase on the number of applications in the first 10 months of 2009.
